Everyone's talking about the 90s lately. Maybe because of the massive 90s style revival of the last year, maybe because all us 90s children are getting to that age where we feel nostalgic about our carefree youth... and we're the ones making the most noise on the internet!
I do love reminiscing about the 90s (and being a kid) - from what I can remember it was amazing. Not only am I pretty sure times actually were better then (the economy wasn't screwed for a start, people had hope for the future, things were a little less complicated) but also we were young, and I'm certain things are just better when you're young! I'm not sure but I reckon whatever era we'd grown up in, we'd still look back with a warm heart, fond memories and a little envious of our former selves.
The things I miss most are being so carefree and having so little that you need to do (a kid thing), the warm summers (is it just me or did we get proper summers back then? Like, ones that were actually sunny!), the playtime, living in a little bubble of your parent(s), siblings and another family or two you and your parents are friends with. Just generally feeling pretty happy and chilled and safe.
I'm not sure it's always so good to be overly nostalgic though - how can you enjoy the present when you're living in the past?
Everyone's wishing things were simpler like they were back then... is that just a sign that all the proper 90s kids (those born in the late 80s and early 90s, the ones old enough in the 90s to actually remember it but young enough, a kid or young teen, for the most of it to be a child of the 90s) are going to be around their early to mid 20s right about now - a time when you're turning into 'a proper adult', you can't deny being a grown-up at 25 like you can at 18 and 21, when you're having to be responsible and make decisions, you're realising you have to look after yourself and the world isn't as easy as you thought, worries occupy your brain that you wouldn't even have been able to imagine 10 years ago. I'm not being negative and saying being in your 20s is hard and just terrible, just that a lot of people might just be realising some hard truths and finding themselves as adults before they get to that age where everything's settled a little more and, quite frankly, they don't care about a lot of the stuff that bothered them 10 years before. So let's remember those sunny, happy times but not wish so hard for the 90s to be back that we forget to live in the 20-teens... The decade nickname sure ain't as good though!
I've never really written much on my blog before, but I was just thinking about this and thought I'd share.
Thanks for reading, here's some fun pictures to reward you =P
Remember, "life is like a box of chocolates - you never know what you're gunna get." Thanks Forest, we love you.
Pretty things are everywhere. X
Why we loved the 90s:
(so basically we loved the fashion, TV and toys by the looks of it!)
Reminiscing about the 90s: everyone's at it!
- Reader's digest is having a go
- Student Beans (a very funny site with lots of the internet goodies) can't resist the 90s nostalgia (not surpirsing as they cater for 'grown-up' 90s kids!)
- People on Yahoo answers like talking about it too (most useful site on the internet FYI. No seriously...)
- This whole 90s nostalgia blog reallly loves the 90s
- This post is about the 90s
- These 90s movie quotes are a good read...
And this video from Microsoft. It's about American 90s kids, and we all know a British 90s kid is a whole different thing but it's quite fun to watch anyway...
Bit of both! |
For a bit of a laugh, this is me in the 90s (cool, hey?!)
By the way, if you like the 90s style revival, have a look at this post on the 90s style revival from last summer ... 90s is big for this summer too but I feel a little less grunge and little more pure, 90s child-like-ness (see Matilda photo above!)
(Hope you enjoyed that visual attack!)
